Week 9 Blog # 2

Faustian Bargain

According to our text, a faustian bargain is, "A deal with the devil; selling your soul for temporary earthly gain."  This information can be found on page 319 in chapter 24 of our book.

I think faustian bargain is a meaningful concept because companies and corporations are doing things like this daily in American society.  Companies continue to pay the people who create the goods they sell cents a day illegally.  They are ruining the lives of people by supporting what many (including myself) consider "slave" labor.  The rich in our country don't care about human rights or anything other than their own economic gain; thus enacting a faustian bargain.

Your example of a faustian bargain is strong. The companies and corporations that have their goods manufactured in third world countries do employ humans for cents a day. This is an international problem. The upper management that makes these deals are not considering the working conditions and/or pay. They are in fact making a deal with the devil. You are right they have no thought of human rights just cheap labor in order to make a profit. On the flip side if they are caught such as Nike was, society does take a stand and makes a difference to the point that the company has to fix the issues or lose business. But again this is done only to keep the deal with the devil and exploit human beings to make a profit.

I agree with the previous comment and your post. Your post is something I can completely understand. There are a lot of companies like Nike, the Gap, Old Navy and others that engage in "slave" labor. Its really sad that they do this just because in will profit them, but not thinking how unfair it is to the workers. Its like they pay them 10 cents an hour to make hundreds of material clothes that they then sell for an average of 60 dollars. So, I liked your post, I'm glad you think its wrong too.

Your take on Faustian bargain was something I hadn't thought of. Last year I saw a documentary of girls in a denim factory in China. It's unbelievable what they are paid and what we pay for those jeans. We pay $70 for a pair of jeans and the worker got 70 cents. We have definitely made a deal with the devil in order to obtain all these wordly goods that we desire. Because the deal usually does not hit close to home, we are oblivious to it. We have to stop and think of the implications our technology has. Yes, it can do good, but it can also bring a lot of bad with it. In the end, the deal is always made because it's always about the money.
